Breast lift surgery, often referred to as mastopexy surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure done to remove and lift breast tissue by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.
The extent of sagging is usually greater in major weight loss patients and the elasticity of skin is also less forgiving. Both of these factors make this type of mastopexy more challenging. Although perfect symmetry is the goal, there are times that you may notice small differences, but a dramatic improvement is almost always achieved. Patient satisfaction after having this procedure is very high.
Incisions for breast lift surgery vary depending on such things as size and shape of breast, size and position of the areola, skin type, amount of excess skin and degree of sagging.
In most cases the incision is made around the areola and vertically down from the areola and in the breast crease. This will be discussed with you and your plastic surgeon in detail during your personal consultation.
Once the incision is made, breast tissue is lifted and shaped. The nipple is then carefully repositioned to a more natural, youthful position. Excess skin will be removed to compensate for loss of elasticity.
Most of the incisions made during surgery are permanent and visible but will fade significantly over time.
Recovery from breast lift surgery is patient- specific. We expect that normal activities will be resumed as quickly as each individual can tolerate it. Swelling may last up to 6 weeks after mastopexy surgery and you should be prepared for your nipple and skin sensation to be altered temporarily.
