Procedure Information: Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Gynecomastia is a condition men of all ages might experience.  It is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men.   It can be the result of hormonal changes, hereditary conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs.  In persons who are obese, weight loss may alter their gynecomastic condition, but often it does not get rid of it completely.  Surgery is the only known remedy at this time.

Reduction mammoplasty is a technique used by plastic surgeons to correct gynecomastia.  This cosmetic procedure reduces the breast size significantly and creates a more masculine, contoured, flat chest.    If, due to excess breast tissue being removed, the breasts sag and cause the areola to stretch,  the position and size of the areola may need to be surgically improved as well.

Gynecomastia surgery is usually done under general anesthesia.  After surgery, bandages will be will be applied to your incisions and an elastic bandage may be used to minimize swelling and to support your chest  during the healing process.

The results of gynecomastia surgery are usually permanent.
