Procedure Information: Rhinoplasty (Nose Job or Nose Surgery)

Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure done to reshape the nose to improve appearance and proportion.  Nose surgery might include reducing or increasing size, removing a bump, narrowing  the nostrils, modifying the  angle between the nose and upper lip, or changing the shape of the nose tip and/or bridge.

Nose surgery can be done using two types of incisions.  A closed procedure is  where incisions are hidden inside the nose.  An open procedure is where an incision is made across the columella which is the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils.

After the nose is entered through these incisions, the soft tissues that cover the nose are gently raised.  This allows the plastic surgeon the best  access to reshape the structure of the nose.

Immediately after nose surgery, there may be packing for 24-48 hours.  This packing is easily removed at bedside or in office.  A splint may be required for a week or so if nasal bones require manipulation.  Otherwise, an outer tape dressing alone would be used.   The use of a small gauze ¨catch pad¨ the first couple of days will reduce soilage from any nasal drainage.  Bruising around the area and under the eyes may be present for 7-10 days following rhinoplasty surgery.  If at all possible you should avoid sprays or vigorous nasal blowing the first week following nose surgery.  All of these topics and more will be discussed during your personal consultation with the plastic surgeon.

We invite and encourage you to view our before and after nose surgery photos on this website.
