What is Sclerotherapy?

If you are a woman in the middle of your childbearing years or in an occupation that requires you to be on your feet all day, you may have noticed some unpleasant changes to the veins in your legs. Unsightly leg veins are generally varicose or spider veins. While both Spider and Varicose veins occur mostly on the legs, their appearance is the easiest way to tell them apart. Spider veins are smaller in comparison to varicose veins. They generally appear in small areas just underneath the surface of the skin. Varicose veins on the other hand are much larger and appear like thick ropes that protrude and bulge, pushing the surface of the skin upwards.

Family history of vein disease, being a woman, pregnancy, obesity, being tall, occupations where a great deal of time is spent on your feet such as teachers, nurses, cashiers and waitresses all raise your risk of these vein problems. Fortunately, there is a proven treatment available called Sclerotherapy to remove spider and smaller varicose veins.

Veins are injected with a sterile chemical sclerant, which irritates the vessel’s lining, making it become inflamed, harden, and eventually fade away completely. Blood circulation is carried out through healthy veins located deeper within the body, so the outward appearance and sometimes pain associated with the problem veins is significantly reduced. The procedure also can improve related symptoms such as aching, swelling, burning and night cramps.

Sclerotherapy requires no anesthesia and is usually performed in an outpatient setting taking approximately 15 to 30 minutes. To obtain optimal results, two or more sessions lasting less than an hour each are usually recommended.
