About Gynecomastia Surgery

gynecomastia pricing and financingGynecomastia, or male breast reduction, is a cosmetic surgery to correct over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. This condition is relatively common in boys and will usually correct itself over time. If it doesn’t, however, we understand how emotionally devastating it can be and we can help. This is not an uncommon condition and it’s being corrected every day by plastic surgeons. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that 15,550 gynecomastia or male breast reduction surgeries were performed by Board Certified Plastic Surgeons in the U.S. in 2008. Call the board-certified plastic surgeons of Aker Aesthetics in Carmel for information on gynecomastia.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will I have to wear the elastic bandage after gynecomastia surgery?

Typically, one week.

Will my scars be big?

Depending on the degree of fullness, the scar may only be a few millimeters for liposuction, a scar halfway around the nipple, or for the more advanced cases with significant skin laxity after weight loss, a scar along the breast fold.

How long does the surgery take?

Between 2-4 hours.

How soon will I be able to start working out again after my gynecomastia surgery?

Light aerobics may be started after one week. More rigorous exercises shouldn’t be resumed for at least 2 weeks.

What are the risks and complications of this cosmetic procedure?

Asymmetry or unevenness on each side or between sides is possible. As with any surgical procedure, there is a small risk of infection, bleeding or thick scar formation.

Will insurance help pay for gynecomastia surgery?

It is unlikely. Although it is an emotionally distressing condition, there is rarely a medical necessity for the procedure.

Does it matter what caused my gynecomastia condition? Will that effect my results?

The results are determined by the amount of tissue or skin you have before the surgery. The type of skin you have may also effect your results. Any ongoing medical condition which promoted previous growth, unlikely in the majority of patients, may continue to stimulate changes in the tissue.

Gynecomastia Procedure Information

Gynecomastia is a condition men of all ages might experience. It is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. It can be the result of hormonal changes, hereditary conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs. In persons who are obese, weight loss may alter their gynecomastic condition, but often it does not get rid of it completely. Surgery is the only known remedy at this time.

Reduction mammoplasty is a technique used by plastic surgeons to correct gynecomastia. This cosmetic procedure reduces the breast size significantly and creates a more masculine, contoured, flat chest. If, due to excess breast tissue being removed, the breasts sag and cause the areola to stretch, the position and size of the areola may need to be surgically improved as well.

Gynecomastia surgery is usually done under general anesthesia. After surgery, bandages will be will be applied to your incisions and an elastic bandage may be used to minimize swelling and to support your chest during the healing process.

The results of gynecomastia surgery are usually permanent.
