Frequently Asked Questions
What are my chances of getting an infection following eyelid surgery?Infection is a very rare complication for any facial surgery.
Will the results I get from this cosmetic procedure be permanent?Although results of blepharoplasty last longer than most other facial rejuvenation procedures, eyelids continue along the path of aging, with duration of results typically 7-10 years.
Why do my eyelids sag?Various tissues undergo changes in the eyelid area resulting in thinning and loss of skin tone, redistribution and alteration in volume of fatty tissue, laxity of the support tissues and the cumulative effects of gravity.
Will the scars from blepharoplasty surgery be permanent?Yes, but very concealed
Will I have to stay overnight at the hospital? No. The procedures are outpatient. In fact, the upper eyelid surgery can usually be done in our office.
Will my eyes be black and blue after blepharoplasty surgery? To a variable extent there is bruising and swelling.
What is the recovery time following eyelid surgery? How soon could I return to work?Upper eyelid surgery lends itself to a speedy recovery with a quick return to work. Lower eyelid surgery results in swelling and bruising for several weeks, possibly requiring more time off work.
Will my eyes be swollen shut when I wake up from my eyelid surgery? If both upper and lower eyelids undergo surgery at the same sitting, then there may be sufficient swelling to result in lids being closed for the first several hours.
I’m a smoker. Will this interfere with my eyelid surgery recovery progress? It may interfere with healing. It is never a good idea to use nicotine products within 8 weeks of surgery.
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty rejuvenates the appearance around the eyes. Aging causes descent of fatty tissue and commonly causes eyelids to droop and puffy bags to develop under the eyes.
Droopy eyelids require upper eyelid surgery which involves making an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid, trimming away excess skin, repositioning fat deposits and tightening the muscles and remaining tissue. A common complaint from patients requesting information on eyelid surgery is that they feel like they look tired all the time, or they look in the mirror and see droopy eyelids. After eyelid surgery, you can expect a rejuvenated look. Most of the time, upper eyelid surgery can be done under local anesthetic in our office.
Lower eyelid surgery is handled differently from upper eyelid surgery and usually needs to be done under general anesthesia. This cosmetic procedure is done by making an incision just below the lower lash line, or from inside the lower eyelid. Through these incisions, excess skin and fatty tissue can be removed from the lower eyelid.
I am a returning patient of Dr. Sando and I would not go to anyone else.

Prior to each procedure, we want our patients to be in general good health. Excessive dryness, history of glaucoma, or prior Lasik procedure may affect the safety or results of blepharoplasty surgery. These and many other topics will be discussed in a personal consultation with your plastic surgeon.
After eyelid surgery, you will probably only experience mild discomfort. Bruising will usually last about one week, possibly a little longer with lower eyelid surgery. There will be some swelling, and how long that swelling lasts depends on the individual. Ice packs, head elevation, avoiding strenuous activities and minimizing salt intake during the first week will help reduce the swelling. Sutures are removed within one week. Overall, recovery after eyelid surgery is reasonably simple.
