What is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma is a preparation using a patient’s own blood. It is used in the orthopedic, neurosurgical, general, and now plastic surgery fields. A centrifuge is used to spin a small volume of the patient’s blood (for our purposes about 1-1/2 fluid ounces) so that the red cells are separated from the clear fluid or plasma portion.
It is this plasma which, when further treated by centrifuge, results in the concentration of the patient’s platelets. These tiny bits of a larger white cell are responsible for some of the initial phases of blood coagulation. It is this property that many of the surgical specialties point to as desirable in procedures which require a minimization of bleeding.
The platelets also contain many proteins, called growth factors, which we now know are very influential in wound healing and new tissue formation. While there are a host of possibilities for this preparation, definitive human studies are still underway. Animal studies have demonstrated benefits in hair growth and wound healing. Their genesis was the observation that veterinarians made in treating race horses. The hair around the wound treated with PRP became thicker as the wound healed.
We are currently offering the use of PRP as an adjunct to our procedures such as facial micro needling and hair rejuvenation. We do not yet believe that PRP is a stand-alone treatment for anything. However, its safety record in both the scientific and clinical areas is so good that we believe it can be used to attempt to improve the efficacy of certain of our existing anesthetic procedures.
PRP and Medical Needling work together
PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma is derived from whole blood and contains over 90% platelets. Platelets will release cytokines (or growth factors) when activated by the wound healing cascade. When PRP is used or injected into specific areas of the skin, it acts as a matrix that promotes your own collagen to grow, regenerates tissue, and may naturally smooth and tighten the skin.
Medical Needling (0.5-3.0mm)
Needling makes channels into the epidermis and dermis to release growth factors that promote healing with reduced scars. Needling achieves results through increased quantities and access of cell nutrients and growth factors to the skin. There is 80% increased absorption of products compared to 7-10% with normal topical application providing essential cell nutrients for stimulating your own collagen naturally.
PRP for Hair Loss
Hair grows in hair follicles. Growth factors and stem cells coexist in the “bulge” area of these follicles. These agents help activate the proliferative phase of the hair. The increase in available cell nutrients may improve vascularization and enhanced follicle growth. Less shedding of hair can be observed within 1-2 months with peak effect at 4-6 months. The PRP-microneedling procedure takes approximately 1 hour with the ability to wash your hair the following day. A mild amount of tenderness to the scalp can be expected and treated with Tylenol. Treatments are recommended every 6 months for 3 visits then yearly after that.

PRP for the Face
The facial combines the benefits of microneedling with placement of PRP directly on the skin. The improved absorption of growth factors may stimulate collagen, growth of new tissue and blood flow hopefully benefitting tone, texture, and color of the skin. This procedure will take about 1 ½ hours with minimal downtime.
The face-shaping uses a combination of a hyaluronic acid filler to augment the matrix of the PRP and allow for improvement of the shape of the face. This filler is a scaffold onto which the stem cells attach. This may have a more dramatic effect on tone, texture and shape of the face with improvements also in collagen stimulation and new blood flow. This procedure will take about 1 ½ hours with minimal downtime.
