As time passes typically we are most concerned about the signs of facial aging. However, similar changes occur throughout the body including our hands. These changes include reduction in skin thickness and elasticity, and loss of volume from the fatty tissue directly under the skin. As this occurs and the skin becomes more translucent, underlying tendons and veins become more visible. Surface signs of aging including age spots and other pigment or vascular irregularities, as well as skin laxity and wrinkling.
Lifting-type procedures are very common in plastic surgery, and include facelifts, eyelid lifts, breast lifts, and tummy tucks. When these procedures are performed excess skin is removed and underlying structures are tightened.
The hand is a wonderfully complex assortment of bones tendons and nerves. Traditional lifting type procedures unfortunately do not specifically address aging changes of the hand. However there are several other procedures that can be used in combination to reduce the visible signs of aging.
Loss of volume in the hands can be treated with a fat grafting procedure, where fatty tissue is removed from another part of the body and injected into the hands. Typically approximately half of the tissue “takes”, and additional procedures may be required to achieve the desired effect. Alternatively synthetic fillers containing hyaluronic acid or hydroxyapetite such as Juviderm, Restylane or Radiesse may be used. As the body slowly dissolves these materials over time, the result lasts1-2 years. As volume is added to the hands underneath the skin, underlying tendons and veins become less visible resulting in a more youthful appearance.
Fine surface wrinkling and pigment irregularities can be improved with a micro laser peel (MLP). In this procedure the very top layer of the skin is removed in a controlled fashion, resulting in a smoother appearance.
Broad Band Light (BBL) treatments effectively reduce red or purple discolorations through a short series of treatments with very little recovery time.
Using a combination of techniques the board certified plastic surgeons Drs Sando and Aker of My Plastic Surgery Group can significantly improve the appearance of your hands.
