What is a deep neck lift?

This procedure tightens underlying neck muscles and removes excess skin to restore a smoother, more defined jawline and neck contour. This may include removing excess submental fat (a “double chin”) as well as removing deeper fat beneath the muscle layer in the neck. It helps to reshape the contour between the neck and chin called the cervicomental angle.

How does it differ from neck liposuction?

Liposuction removes fat only in the superficial layer immediately beneath the skin, while a deep neck lift uses a surgical technique to address the deeper layers, tighten muscles and skin, and address sagging rather than just fullness.

What is the recovery time?

Swelling and bruising usually last 1–2 weeks. Most patients return to work within 1–2 weeks, with full results visible over 2–3 months.

Are there visible scars?

Who is a good candidate?

Before Your Necklift

Before you decide to have neck lift surgery, you will have to schedule a consultation with your plastic surgeon. Disclosing your full medical history will help your plastic surgeon ensure that the surgery is right for you. This will include discussing your general health, the condition of your skin, your tendency to scar, and any allergies or past procedures.

You will need to clearly communicate your aesthetic needs and goals for the procedure. You may also be able to look over neck lift before and after photos from past patients. This is done so that you can get an idea of your potential results.

You will have to stop smoking six weeks before the procedure, since smoking negatively affects the health of the skin tissues and can lead to complications. You will also need to abstain from taking NSAIDs like Ibuprofen and aspirin, since these can increase your chances of bleeding.

The Necklift Procedure

Neck lift surgery takes a few hours to complete. It is usually performed under a general anesthetic. Once this takes effect, the surgeon makes minute incisions behind the ears and/or beneath the chin.

The sagging platysma muscles are cinched and sewn tightly with internal sutures. The surgeon very meticulously trims the extra skin away with a scalpel (a process called excision) and tightens the remaining skin. Additionally, liposuction is performed to remove excess fat.

Finally, incisions are closed using sutures. A pressure bandage will be applied around the head and surrounding the area of the chin. Drains will be placed, too, as there may be excess bleeding and fluid.

Neck Lift Recovery

Each patient’s recovery process depends on the exact type of neck lift performed. While some cases require liposuction, skin excision, and muscle tightening, many only require one or two of these techniques. This affects the required recovery time.

Swelling and bruising may be evident for up to a few weeks and will subside as healing progresses. Keeping your head and neck elevated helps to address these issues, as do cold compresses.

Time off from work will be required, and patients must avoid physically taxing activities like heavy exercise routines and sports. Once all healing is complete, patients can enjoy their full results.

What is “rippling”?

It is common to feel a slight “crinkly” sensation along the breast fold where the implant comes closest to the surface. In very slender women, there may be visible wrinkling on the skin surface. It is more commonly observed with saline than with silicone gel implants and can occur in different areas of the breast.

Is over-the-muscle or under-the-muscle breast implant placement better?

The breast implant pocket can be either directly behind the breast tissue or behind the pectoral muscle which is behind the breast tissue. Dr. Aker prefers to place the implant behind the pectoral muscle to give the upper breast a more natural slope and graceful appearance.

Will breast augmentation improve sagging breasts?

While limited breast sagging is frequently corrected by breast augmentation, a breast lift may be required for greater degrees of drooping.

What are the most common complications after breast augmentation?

A common short-term issue is temporary changes in nipple sensation. A temporary tight sensation in the armpit may also occur when the endoscopic technique is performed.

How soon will I be able to return to work?

For less physical job requirements, patients can usually return to work after 3–5 days, while those with more physically demanding jobs may need 5–7 days.

Will my breast implants interfere with a mammogram?

Women with breast implants can continue to have routine mammograms. Because implants can make some breast tissue more difficult to see, additional views or special imaging techniques may be used to obtain a thorough examination. Be sure to let the mammography facility know that you have breast implants when scheduling your appointment so they can plan accordingly.

Will my scars be noticeable after my surgery?

If the endoscopic technique is used, there will be no scar on the breast at all. With the inframammary approach, there will be visible scars in the crease under the breast, though they fade significantly over time.

Can I breastfeed after I have breast augmentation surgery?

Many women are able to breastfeed after breast augmentation. However, it is not possible to predict with certainty how breastfeeding will be affected. Your surgeon can discuss this with you in more detail based on your procedure and future plans for pregnancy and breastfeeding.
