Who Is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation candidates must be in good general health, have fully developed breasts, and have realistic expectations for the procedure’s outcome. Since pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect breast size and shape, patients often choose to wait until their family is complete to undergo this surgery to avoid compromising their results and a potential need for a revision procedure. 

If breast sagging is a concern, implants alone may not provide the result you are looking for. In those cases, your surgeon may recommend a breast lift or discuss combining a lift with augmentation.

If I gain any weight, will my liposuction results be ruined?

Small amounts of weight gain do not harm results, but certainly, since the results of liposuction can be subtle, it is best to avoid weight gain.

What is laser-assisted liposuction? Do you do this?

This is a newly developed technique which removes fat and simultaneously heats the skin to induce minor shrinkage. Currently we are evaluating its merits, but do not yet offer it.

What is ultrasonic liposuction?

Ultrasonic Liposuction is an approach in which microwave energy causes fat cells to liquefy so that they can be vacuumed out through the cannula.

Why is it important to be well hydrated before liposuction surgery?

Liposuction causes fluid shifts to occur in the body. Preoperative hydration helps to make those shifts of fluid the smoothest and safest possible.

Is this cosmetic surgery procedure safe?

It is very safe. Blood loss is usually moderate and infections are rare. The risk of blood clots is comparable to other anesthetic procedures.

Is there a risk of infection with this procedure?

Infection risk is minimal. Preventative antibiotics are used.

How much weight can I lose with liposuction?

Liposuction is considered a contouring procedure, not a weight loss operation. There is no significant weight loss with this procedure.

Will I have very much swelling following my liposuction procedure?

Moderate swelling can be alleviated by wearing compression garments and by reducing salt in your diet. Usually lower trunk swelling lasts 3 to 6 months, and thigh, arm, and breast swelling will last about 1-3 months.

What medications should I avoid if I’m considering liposuction?

Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as Motrin, Advil, Ibuprofen and Aleve. And, because they may cause bleeding, you should avoid fish oil (Omega 3) capsules. Herbal products should also be avoided. All of this will be covered in depth with your plastic surgeon prior to cosmetic surgery.

How can I get rid of cellulite for good?

Unfortunately, there are no proven techniques for permanent cellulite removal.

How long will I need to be off work following liposuction?

It depends on how many areas are operated. This can be discussed with your plastic surgeon during your consultation.

Will I be awake during this procedure?

This procedure is normally performed under general anesthesia.

Will liposuction tighten my skin?

Ordinarily not.

How much does liposuction cost?

The cost of liposuction varies. The price of the procedure is impacted by the size and number of targeted regions, the techniques employed, and the amount of fat removed.

The Goal of Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is a surgical procedure intended to reduce targeted areas of fat accumulation – e.g. abdomen, pubis, flanks, back, buttocks, thighs, arms, chin, and neck (subcutaneous, not core fat). Tiny hidden incisions are made in the skin to allow the insertion of small vacuum cylindrical cannulas. Liposuction is often used as part of other procedures like the tummy tuck and male breast reduction to treat gynecomastia.

Fat cells are microscopic fat storage containers. Disruption/removal of these reduces the number of storage containers in a given area, thereby resulting in a reduction of this regional stored volume of fat. Liposuction is a very safe operation when performed by skilled, experienced, careful surgeons.

Good Liposuction Candidates

Patients with good skin tone or elasticity (relative absence of stretch marks or dimpled cellulite) and a normal or slightly above normal body mass are the best candidates for liposuction. Focal areas of fat accumulation (e.g. “saddlebags” in women/“love handles” or large breasts in men) represent ideal targets for liposuction.

It is not a shortcut to weight loss by itself, although patients have considered its value as an emotional springboard for launching into an effective dieting-exercise weight loss program. Stressed skin, i.e. exposed to nicotine, chronic sun, massive weight changes, hormone or medication effects, advancing age with telltale signs of laxity, stretch marks, or cellulite dimpling often has a tendency to sag after fat removal and needs to be evaluated by an experienced physician first.

Liposuction Process

Liposuction is an operation in which one or more small (Band-aid coverable) incision(s) is made in a hidden site and through which is inserted a vacuum wand or cannula. Vacuum suction is applied and subcutaneous fat then is extracted into a bottle from which the fat can be processed for use elsewhere (e.g. face) or simply discarded.
Fat is a soft yellow, gelatinous, energy–rich tissue. Interestingly, the fat on the back side of the body has a tougher, more gristly nature as there are tiny white fibers passing through this fat. After suctioning, the surgeon closes the incisions with tiny sutures and applies a Band-aid. Usually the procedure is performed outpatient under an anesthetic. Drains are seldom required. Although antibiotics routinely are used, the risk of infection is very small.

Liposuction Recovery and Results

Afterwards protected activities are encouraged. A compression garment may be worn for added comfort. Swelling for 6-8 weeks is common. The biological age of the skin determines shrinkage: young elastic skin shrinks nicely; stressed (see above) skin tends to relax downward. Strategic performance of liposuction in concert with adjacent skin removal or tightening can help alleviate this tendency, and requires the artful experience of the surgeon.

How much does breast augmentation cost in Indianapolis?

What is “rippling”?

It is common to feel a slight “crinkly” sensation along the breast fold where the implant comes closest to the surface. In very slender women, there may be visible wrinkling on the skin surface. It is more commonly observed with saline than with silicone gel implants and can occur in different areas of the breast.

Is over-the-muscle or under-the-muscle breast implant placement better?

The breast implant pocket can be either directly behind the breast tissue or behind the pectoral muscle which is behind the breast tissue. Dr. Aker prefers to place the implant behind the pectoral muscle to give the upper breast a more natural slope and graceful appearance.

Will breast augmentation improve sagging breasts?

While limited breast sagging is frequently corrected by breast augmentation, a breast lift may be required for greater degrees of drooping.

What are the most common complications after breast augmentation?

A common short-term issue is temporary changes in nipple sensation. A temporary tight sensation in the armpit may also occur when the endoscopic technique is performed.

Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices and may need to be replaced after 10 to 15 years. Regular follow-up with your surgeon can help monitor your implants and address any issues if they occur.

How do I choose the right breast implant size?

What is the difference between silicone and saline implants?

Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel, while saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. We help you select the option that best fits your goals and anatomy during your consultation.

Is it possible to combine breast augmentation with other procedures?

Absolutely. Breast augmentation surgery is frequently combined with tummy tuck surgery or breast lift surgery for a “mommy makeover” to address pregnancy-related changes in breast and body contours.

Do saline implants last longer than gel implants?

The failure rate over time is about the same.

Could I lose nipple sensation after my breast augmentation?

It is very unlikely to permanently lose sensation. It is common to have temporary increased or decreased sensation.

If I gain weight, will my implants look different?

This varies from woman to woman. Some women experience significant changes in breast size with weight fluctuations, while others notice very little change.

I’ve heard my implants might “settle”. What does that mean?

Shortly after surgery, the implants tend to “ride high” due to spasm of the muscle. Over the weeks following surgery, the muscle and breast tissue relax, allowing the implant to descend into a more natural position. This process is called “settling”.

How soon will I be able to return to work?

For less physical job requirements, patients can usually return to work after 3–5 days, while those with more physically demanding jobs may need 5–7 days.

Will my breast implants interfere with a mammogram?

Women with breast implants can continue to have routine mammograms. Because implants can make some breast tissue more difficult to see, additional views or special imaging techniques may be used to obtain a thorough examination. Be sure to let the mammography facility know that you have breast implants when scheduling your appointment so they can plan accordingly.

Will my scars be noticeable after my surgery?

If the endoscopic technique is used, there will be no scar on the breast at all. With the inframammary approach, there will be visible scars in the crease under the breast, though they fade significantly over time.

Can I breastfeed after I have breast augmentation surgery?

Many women are able to breastfeed after breast augmentation. However, it is not possible to predict with certainty how breastfeeding will be affected. Your surgeon can discuss this with you in more detail based on your procedure and future plans for pregnancy and breastfeeding.
